It all began in the mid sixties. It was the time when Britain defined “cool” and photography was changing with the mood of the time.
Black & White photography was still mainstream and colour photography began to drop in here and there. Single lens reflex 35mm cameras were all the rage, giving freedom and flexibility to be creative. Film such as Kodak Tri-x and Plus-x, Ilford FP4 and HP5 were the tools of the trade. It was one of the most exciting times in photography. The printed page was to change forever and new fresh clinical images on white backgrounds stood out in magazines.
I trained with five professional photographers in a vibrant local photographic business - Aberdeen Photographic Services. I started work in the photographic studio, expanding into commercial and advertising photography as well as wedding and fashion.
This went on for three years until I joined Gray’s School of Art in 1969. I worked there as the schools first photographic technician, undertaking a wide range of photographic assignments. In 1991 I became the schools first “Application Supervisor” which meant teaching photographic skills to students and staff.
I gained an honorary masters degree in 2009 before leaving Gray’s in June 2011. During this period of time I practiced photography extensively and am still actively enjoying its challenge today.
